ELSO 2000

Initial goal of ELSO will be to organize
meetings in European cities that each year provide a high profile
international forum serving the interests of our scientific community.
Its defining characteristic will be that it promotes the science
and activities of European biologists using molecular tools without
regard to national interests. The highlight of the meeting will
be the poster sessions which will take place in the midst of
the scientific exhibition. The scientific exhibition is planned
to become the prime opportunity for industry to present its products
to the European scientific community. A major goal of the meeting
is to stimulate and promote mobility and scientific collaboration
in Europe. Another important function will be to promote the
public understanding of new developments in the life sciences
and to provide a critical forum for discussing their implications
for society.
The ELSO council has set up
the organization. The first meeting took place in
Geneva September 2-6, 2000
and was organized by Denis Duboule and Jean Gruenberg together
with the
ELSO 2000 - Scientific Advisory Committee. The size of
the meeting was about 2000 participants and was a great success. The
meeting program was excellent and the lecture halls were packed. Most
importantly, also the poster sessions were of highest quality and
around the posterstands traffic was so heavy that everyone attending
was astonished. Also the industrial exhibition was a big winner and
demonstrated the need for such a lively meeting. The goals and the
dreams of the organizers were thus fully realized. ELSO has therefore
decided to continue its activities and the next meeting will be in
NICE, France in June 29 - July 3.
