This symposium seeks to better understand the more unusual indications for ECMO in adults and adolescents. With a focus on liver failure and transplantation, haematological disease, and cardiac disease especially within the UK setting, national and international speakers have been brought together to help open up the debate about widening the role of ECMO in sub-specialist populations.

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Procirca Comprehensive Adult ECMO Training Course is a 3.5 day course designed for health care professionals interested in a foundational education in the care of the adult ECMO patient. Course content includes lecture on topics ranging from understanding the components of the ECMO circuit, patient selection, cannulation strategies and management of various ECMO patient groups to weaning and decannulation. ECMO experts from UPMC will discuss topics covering complex patient management as well as the more practical concerns related to creating and maintaining a successful ECMO program, including billing and reimbursement. Lecture will be supported with simulation based learning, including ECMO circuit basics, an interactive ECMO cannulation model, handling ECMO emergencies, ECMO transport and high fidelity case simulation scenarios to help develop patient management and troubleshooting skills. Hands on time with multiple ECMO systems will be available. This activity has been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) ™. Course registration is $2750, and includes the ELSO “Red Book” and ECMO Specialist Training Manual. For more information or to register visit www.procirca.com or contact Melissa Grayson at graysonm@upmc.edu. This course takes advantage of modern educational concepts to provide clinically relevant material through realistic scenarios and simulation on ECMO initiation, management and removal. This highly interactive approach puts the learner in the position of the clinician needing to make simple thorough complex decisions commonly faced when providing ECMO. There will be limited traditional didactic presentations and a greater emphasis on interactive learning in small groups using accelerated scenarios around specific topics. Hands-on simulation will be used to expose the learner to a range of typical management issues and ECMO emergencies. For both novice and experienced ECMO care givers, the course will provide an exceptional learning environment for solid ECLS concepts and energize ECMO providers to offer state-of-the-art lifesaving opportunities for critically ill patients.
