Guidelines for ECMO in COVID-19 patients
ELSO has prepared an in-depth set of guidelines for ECMO in COVID-19 patients. These have been collaboratively developed by a global team of ECMO experts. The guidelines include: patient selection criteria, cannulation and decannulation strategies, transport on ECMO, PPE and staff protection strategies with ECMO, to ethical dilemmas and quality. ELSO wants to recognize the leadership of Kiran Shekar in chairing the development of these guidelines during a critical time.

Reporting COVID19 Cases into the ELSO Registry.
In an effort to better understand the impact of COVID19 on ECMO we have added a question asking if a patient has COVID19. Confirmed COVID-19 cases should utilize the ICD-10 emergency code U07.1, 2019-nCoV acute respiratory disease as the primary diagnosis. The COVID-19 addendum is now available. Please enter your cases when they go on ECMO and update record as needed.
There are 4 response options.
COVID19 confirmed by testing
COVID19 suspected but NO testing
No clinical suspicion of COVID19 (and no testing)
COVID19 confirmed negative
ECMO Capacity Map
ELSO has developed a map that quickly shows ECMO capacity (map: https://www.elso.org/Membership/CenterMap.aspx). Center administrators can update the capacity here: http://www.elso.org/UpdateECMOCapacity) or from the Manage - Manage Center Details section. Please download a new app (search for: ELSO Update ECMO Capacity) on your mobile device for efficient capacity status communication, which should be available very soon.
Dear ELSO Member,
ELSO is dedicated to the development and evaluation of novel therapies for support of failing organ systems and provision of education, training, research, and data management for the advancement of extracorporeal life support throughout the world. Toward that end, ELSO currently offers the ELSO Award for Excellence in Life Support to qualified ELSO member centers that wish to receive designation as a Center of Excellence in Life Support. Centers that meet the criteria are welcome to apply and if successful are recognized as distinguished leaders in critical care. The ELSO Award for Excellence is recognized by the US News and World Report and Parents magazine as one criterion for top institutions providing ECLS.
ELSO’s goal is to recognize and honor ECLS programs that meet or exceed performance, innovation, satisfaction and quality levels defined by ELSO member centers through a broad certification program to be launched soon. Please join us in Hawaii for our 31st Annual ELSO meeting, where we will announce an exciting new process to recognize ECLS Centers.
