Welcome to ELSO

The Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) is an international non-profit consortium of health care institutions who are dedicated to the development and evaluation of novel therapies for support of failing organ systems. Crucial is the promotion of a broad multidisciplinary collaboration. The primary mission of the Organization is to maintain a registry of, at least, use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in active ELSO centers. As appropriate, registries of other novel forms of organ system support are within the purview of ELSO. Registry data is to be used to support clinical research, support regulatory agencies, and support individual ELSO centers. ELSO provides educational programs for active centers as well as for the broader medical and lay communities.

OUR VISION

Notice:

ELSO is in communication with Getinge regarding supply disruption relating to a number of their Cardiopulmonary products. ELSO.org will post updates on this topic, as information is received to best inform the ECLS community.

ECMO in novel coronavirus (nCoV) infection

The WHO is distributing an Interim Guidance document for the "Clinical management of severe acute respiratory infection when Novel coronavirus (nCoV) infection is suspected." The medical community is closely monitoring the outbreak. The WHO guidance document includes a statement to "consider referral patients with refractory hypoxemia despite lung-protective ventilation in settings with access to expertise in ECLS."

Where ECLS expertise is available, ECLS should be considered according to the standard management algorithm for ARDS in supporting patients with viral lower respiratory tract infection. However, clearly at this time, there is little worldwide experience with using ECLS to support nCOV-infected patients. ELSO will continue to collect data through our member centers and provide recommendations as additional information becomes available.

Certification

Dear ELSO Member,

The Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (“ELSO”) is committed to protecting your privacy and information. Recently an organization, DNV-GL, sent an email messages to ELSO members soliciting participation in their DNV GL ECLS Certification Program. This email was not endorsed or authorized by ELSO and ELSO did not provide its mailing list to the sender. The use of email addresses or other identifying information of ELSO website users for any purpose not specifically authorized by ELSO is strictly prohibited by the website Terms of Use. ELSO has no knowledge of the content or quality of the program offered by DNV-GL and does not endorse or have a relationship with DNV-GL.

ELSO is dedicated to the development and evaluation of novel therapies for support of failing organ systems and provision of education, training, research, and data management for the advancement of extracorporeal life support throughout the world. Toward that end, ELSO currently offers the ELSO Award for Excellence in Life Support to qualified ELSO member centers that wish to receive designation as a Center of Excellence in Life Support. Centers that meet the criteria are welcome to apply and if successful are recognized as distinguished leaders in critical care. The ELSO Award for Excellence is recognized by the US News and World Report and Parents magazine as one criterion for top institutions providing ECLS.

ELSO’s goal is to recognize and honor ECLS programs that meet or exceed performance, innovation, satisfaction and quality levels defined by ELSO member centers through a broad certification program to be launched soon. Please join us in Hawaii for our 31st Annual ELSO meeting, where we will announce an exciting new process to recognize ECLS Centers.

CMS Update

As many of you are aware, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reassigned the Diagnostic Related Group codes for patients supported on ECMO using peripheral vessels for fiscal year 2019 (DRG codes are used to determine hospital payment). This decision was based upon the misguided belief that cannulation site was associated with patient acuity and the necessary consumption of hospital resources. ELSO and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) lead an effort to work with CMS in reversing this decision. Using the ELSO Registry, financial data from several leading centers, as well as projections on the impact to hospitals and patients, we were able to recruit 15 additional specialty societies to join our cause. On Tuesday, April 23rd, CMS publically released the proposed DRG assignments for fiscal year 2020. We are pleased to announce that THE INJURIOUS PAYMENT CUTS HAVE BEEN REVERSED. CMS acknowledged the importance of your ELSO Registry data which contradicted the presence of any relationship between cannulation site and acuity. We thank you for your tireless efforts and meticulous attention to detail in making our Registry effective in quality assurance, research, education, and patient advocacy. ELSO will continue to represent the ECMO community and most importantly, our patients.
