The ELSO Award of Excellence in Life Support recognizes the top extracorporeal life support (ECLS) programs worldwide. ELSO Centers of Excellence distinguish themselves through their processes, procedures and systems that promote exceptional care in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

Purpose

The ELSO Award for Excellence in Life Support recognizes ECLS programs worldwide that distinguish themselves by having processes, procedures and systems in place that promote excellence and exceptional care in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

The ELSO Award for Excellence in Extracorporeal Life Support

The application is a multi-focus assessment of a quality centric ECLS Center. ECLS Centers should use ELSO guidelines and go above and beyond expectations. Centers must be experienced in patient care with established policies and procedures. They should have a comprehensive, in-depth training and education process, as well as a defined family education program. Centers must incorporate highly developed quality initiatives and continuously review processes within their program. Outcome reviews must be demonstrated as an integral component of their organization

The application is divided into seven sections:

  • Systems Focus:Supply generalized institutional information
  • Environmental Focus:Define the facility and equipment available for ECLS
  • Workforce Focus:Describe personnel caring for the patient
  • Knowledge Management:Detail specifics on ECLS Team training and competencies
  • Quality Focus:Provide evidence regarding continuous quality improvement activities
  • Process Optimization:Explain strategies developed from outcome and quality reviews
  • Patient & Family Focus:Illustrate family education and participation in care

*Application fee & ELSO membership dues must be fully current by March 1

**All Award of Excellence designations are for a three-year period beginning on January 1. For example: January 1, 2025 – December 31, 2027.
